How Many Times Can a QR Code Be Scanned?

There is no limit. A QR code is a printed pattern of squares, not a device — it can be scanned an unlimited number of times, by any number of people, forever, and the code itself counts and caps nothing. When someone runs into a "limit", it comes from the service behind a dynamic code, or from a cap they set on purpose — never from the code on the paper.

The code itself has no counter

Scanning is a one-way read: a camera looks at the pattern, applies error correction and recovers the text. The code does not know it was scanned, cannot phone home and has nowhere to store a tally. A poster scanned a million times is in exactly the same state as one nobody has touched. So "how many scans are left" is never a real question about the code.

So where does a "limit" actually come from?

Three real sources, and it is worth knowing which is which:

• A dynamic code's plan quota. A dynamic code routes every scan through a redirect service, and that service may cap how many scans it counts or forwards per month on a given plan. • A cap you set on purpose. Some dynamic codes can be told to stop after a number of scans or a date — handy for a limited offer or a one-time link. That is a feature you switch on, not a built-in ceiling.
• The destination, not the code. If the page a code points to goes offline, the scan "fails" — but the code is intact; the website is the thing that broke.

Static vs dynamic, on limits

A static code is truly unlimited and uncounted: no service sits behind it, so nothing can cap or measure the scans. A dynamic code can also be scanned an unlimited number of times, but the plan behind it governs how many scans get counted and redirected in a period. In both cases the physical scanning is unbounded — the difference is only what the service chooses to record.

"How many scans" is not "how much data"

People often mix two different questions. Scan count is unlimited. Data capacity — how much information one code can hold — is finite: a single QR code stores up to about 7,089 digits, 4,296 alphanumeric characters, or 2,953 bytes. That ceiling is about how long a link or message can be, not about how many times it can be read.
